In comedy, less is often more. Keeping the joke simple and to the point is the best way to get the biggest laughs. If you need any proof of this, just take a look at the works of British artist and musician Dave Clamp.
Clamp creates simple illustrations that are packed with humor. His works are usually black and white, with a small amount of details and a few lines of text. Despite this, the idea behind them is always so funny that you can’t help but laugh.
“I try to keep it simple. I don’t even use backgrounds or shading for the most part. The most important thing for me is to tell a short story with every drawing. I also love wordplay. You can tell a joke with a single word if you know what you’re doing – or you can do it with no words at all! It’s all about the idea!,” Clamp shared in a recent interview with Bored Panda.
Clamp’s works might seem like something created by a seasoned veteran but he is fairly new to the world of illustrations. Everything started when he acquired a whiteboard, hoping it would help him get a better organization. But it didn’t take long before he started using it for drawing instead of writing.
He liked the practice as it helped him relax following a long day or a tiring recording session. But since one drawing needed to disappear for another to come to life on the whiteboard, he eventually started making digital illustrations and sharing them on social media.
